Report on Buckingham Automotive Forum, 1 March
Yesterday’s Buckingham Automotive Forum was well attended by leading automotive experts and several people commented that it was the best forum so far.
- Professor Peter Cook delivered a wide-ranging talk on the economic situation, in which he expressed ongoing concern about the likelihood of the UK returning to a full recession this year.
- Mike Wise, newly-appointed Director-Tyre Programmes at Epyx, explained how the internet is affecting the tyre market.
- Rick Yarrow; Managing Director; FleetEye AG, showed the results of research into the level of service the leasing industry delivers to its customers, which concluded that it’s doing ‘just ok’ but that there’s plenty of scope for improvement. .
- Colin Tourick delivered a talk that showed how sharply the UK contract hire industry has contracted in recent years, and compared this with the US market. (Actually he ‘eventually delivered’ this talk: an in-joke that only the attendees will understand)
- And Ian Brooks of the Compliance Bureau rounded off the forum with a talk about the link between corporate social responsibility and work-related road safety, and gave a ‘call to action’ for businesses to take road safety more seriously.
There was probably more discussion and interaction between speakers and the forum members than at any previous forum. All in all it was an excellent day.
The next Forum will be on 16 May.

What a year!
2011 proved quite eventful for us.
The highlights were that we:
- Had 3 new books published
- Worked on the development of a new pan-Asian leasing company
- Worked on interesting projects in France and the Netherlands
- Helped to run 4 Buckingham Forums
- Worked on 9 small advisory projects, mainly for investors looking to buy into the UK fleet market
- Helped 3 major groups go out to tender for their global fleet requirements
- Developed our new price optimisation software
- Ran training and coaching sessions in 7 of the largest organisations in the UK
- Gave 11 public talks, mainly on fleet- and pricing- related topics
- Had a monthly column published in Fleet Week on the Mathematics of Leasing
- Had 12 other articles published
- Had 20,000 visitors to our website
- Sold nearly 3,000 books
- Colin was appointed non-exec director of Carbon Heroes
Our plans for 2012 include:
- Building on the success of the Buckingham Forums
- Running fleet conferences in Australia and the Far East
- Implementing pricing software and solutions in a number of finance and leasing companies
- Publication of two new leasing books

COLIN Tourick, fleet consultant and one of the experts on our Ask The Experts panel, has spread his wings further with appointment to the board of Carbon Heroes as a non-executive director.
Congratulations to him from us here at Business Car Manager.
Now, possibly, you’ve not heard of Carbon Heroes, but this is a company that assists other businesses to reduce the environmental impact of their employees’ commuting and business travel, delivering cost savings in the process.

What is the Buckingham Automotive Forum?
The Forum is a quarterly gathering of senior executives from the automotive industry, who meet to learn, discuss, debate and network. It is held at the University of Buckingham Business School and is open to all senior executives from the automotive industry.
The Forum is unique: it is not a commercial event (it costs under £100 including lunch) and is not a selling event (no-one is selling anything to anyone). Instead we look at the results of the latest industry and business school research, discuss topics of mutual interest and share ideas and experiences. Numbers are limited to 40. The forum is followed by a buffet lunch, which allows the opportunity to network with other attendees.
